Glacier Metal Details Line Of Ship Bearings
The Glacier Metal Company Limited of Middlesex, England, was founded by a U.S. citizen over 75 years ago. During the intervening period, the firm has become one of the world's leaders in plain bearing technology, and manufactures bearings and bearing assemblies in six factories employing nearly 5,000 people. In addition, it has licensees in highly industrialized countries and agents almost everywhere else in the world.
Of particular interest to the offshore oil industry and its supporting services is the new Glacier-Pilgrim "Coastguard" sterngear system. This "fail-safe" development prevents the leakage of seawater into lubricating oil or the accidental discharge of lubricating oil into the sea. Also suitable for self-propelled semisubmersible drilling rigs and for supporting vessels and tankers is the Glacier-Herbert sterngear system which allows inspection or replacement of the aft seal and/or sterntube bearing without the need for drydocking. These operations can be carried out while the vessel is afloat and in any condition of loading.
• The Glacier-Pilgrim and the Glacier-Herbert systems may be combined to give the advantages of both. Other main shafting bearing assemblies such as plummer bearings and main thrust blocks are also manufactured by the company.
Bearings for main propulsion diesel engines and turbines, as well as for auxiliary engines, pumps, compressors, etc., are supplied in a wide range of bearing materials for particular applications. The company also offers a bearing design service (using special computer programs) to engine and equipment designers.
